Savanna's Act: Justice for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women

Please join us for the April 12th MWL Member Monday event, presented in collaboration with the Minnesota American Indian Bar Association and MWL’s Community Action & Advocacy Committee.

In December 2020, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Task Force reported that in Minnesota, Indigenous women are seven times more likely than white women to be murdered; in any given month, about 15% of the female missing persons cases are American Indian women and girls. Recently, Congress enacted Savanna’s Act, a law requiring the United States Department of Justice to review, revise, and develop law enforcement and justice protocols to address missing or murdered Native Americans. Panelists Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, Rep. Jamie Becker-Finn, and Professor Sarah Deer, will discuss the provisions of the act, its intended impacts, and how our communities can address this important justice issue. The panel will be moderated by Arielle Wagner, President of the Minnesota American Indian Bar Association and attorney at Lockridge Grindal Nauen.

We are honored to welcome our esteemed panelists:

  • Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan, State of Minnesota
  • Representative Jamie Becker-Finn, Minnesota House of Representatives
  • Professor Sarah Deer, University Distinguished Professor, University of Kansas
  • Moderator: Arielle Wagner, Lockridge Gindal Nauen P.L.L.P., President of MAIBA
